About the ANU GPA System

The Australian National University multiplies each course's grade point value by its units, adds the results across your academic career and divides by the total units. ANU's example: eight graded courses worth 72 units give 300 / 72 = 4.167, with a CRS and a DA course left out and a not-completed (NCN) course counted as 0. Your GPA is published on your academic transcript.

Why GPA Matters at ANU

Under the Coursework Awards Rule 2024 an associate or bachelor degree is granted as an ungraded Pass. Honours degrees are classified First Class, Second Class Division A or B, or Third Class from honours grades (H1 80-100, H2A 70-79, H2B 60-69). A graduate diploma or coursework master's degree can be awarded with Commendation only with a weighted average mark of 80% or higher.

ANU Grading Note

ANU calculates the GPA on a 7-point scale: HD (80-100) 7, D (70-79) 6, CR (60-69) 5, P (50-59) 4 and PS (a pass at a supplementary exam, mark 50) 4; N (0-49), NCN and WN count 0. ANU's HD band starts at 80. Where a WAM is required, ANU uses the sum of mark times units divided by the total units, with NCN and WN at a nominal mark of zero; our WAM calculator (linked in the FAQ below) covers it.

ANU Accuracy Scope

One GPA covers your whole academic career, across all programs in it. Pass/fail courses, withdrawals without failure (WD, WL), CRS, deferred or pending results and credit (STI, STE) are left out, and so are pre-1994 grades. ANU calculates to three decimal points; this calculator shows two (4.167 in ANU's example shows as 4.17). No GPA is calculated for research programs, the MBBS, the MChD or the Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice. ANU's GPA table lists honours grades H1, H2A, H2B and H3 at 7, 6, 5 and 4 (with an asterisk the page does not explain): enter them as HD, D, CR and P. ANU's grading-scale page gives H3 as 50-59 and its assessment policy as 59 and below, so no H3 band is shown.

GPA Tips for ANU Students

  • Enter a pass at a supplementary exam (PS) as 4, like a Pass.
  • Enter NCN (not completed) and WN (withdrawn with failure) as 0 with their units.
  • HD starts at 80 at ANU, so do not convert marks with an 85-for-HD table from another university.

Common GPA Mistakes at ANU

Keeping a separate GPA for each program. ANU gives one GPA per academic career: if you change programs within your undergraduate career, all your units stay in the same GPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the ANU GPA calculated?
GPA = the sum of (grade point value x units) divided by the sum of units, to three decimal points. ANU's example: CR, D, P and PS in 6-unit courses, N in 12 units, CR in 12, HD in 18 and NCN in 6 give 300 / 72 = 4.167. A CRS and a DA course in the same example are left out.
What is the ANU grading scale?
HD 80-100 (7), D 70-79 (6), CR 60-69 (5), P 50-59 (4), PS 50 (4) and N 0-49 (0). NCN (not completed/fail) and WN (withdrawn with failure) also count 0. This scale has applied to all ANU courses since first semester 1994.
Does ANU use a GPA or a WAM?
Both. The GPA is published on your transcript. Where a WAM is required, for example for the with Commendation award (80% or higher) in graduate diplomas and coursework master's degrees, ANU calculates it as the sum of (mark x units) divided by the sum of units, with NCN and WN at a nominal mark of zero and pass/fail courses left out. Try the WAM calculator.
Do fails count in the ANU GPA?
Yes. N (fail), NCN (not completed/fail) and WN (withdrawn with failure) all count 0 with their units. Withdrawals without failure (WD, WL) and pass/fail courses are left out.
What grading system does ANU use?
The Australian National University uses a 7-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
Which ANU grade points are used on this page?
This page uses the following grade points for ANU: HD (High Distinction)=7.00, D (Distinction)=6.00, CR (Credit)=5.00, P (Pass)=4.00, PS (Supplementary pass)=4.00, N (Fail)=0.00, NCN (Not completed)=0.00, WN (Withdrawal fail)=0.00.
Is this ANU calculator valid for every programme?
