About the Griffith GPA System

Griffith reports three GPAs: a Trimester GPA; a Program GPA over all attempts at all courses in your program; and a Career GPA over all attempts at one career level (undergraduate or postgraduate), which carries on across programs. Students who commenced before Semester 1, 2015 only have a Career GPA reported. Your official GPA is on your Academic Transcript.

Why GPA Matters at Griffith

Griffith uses the GPA for academic progression, admission to advanced studies such as Honours, and eligibility for prizes, the University Medal, the Award for Academic Excellence and scholarships. For good academic progress you must successfully complete 50% or more of the courses you are enrolled in and maintain a program GPA of at least 3.5.

Griffith Grading Note

Griffith grades on a seven-point scale where the grade is the grade point: 7 High Distinction (85-100%), 6 Distinction, 5 Credit and 4 Pass (50-64.5%). The fail grades 3, 2 and 1 still count as 3, 2 and 1, while FNS and WF count as 0. The Calculation of Grade Point Average Local Protocol (effective 26 August 2026) rounds the GPA to two decimal places, which is what this calculator shows.

Griffith Accuracy Scope

Non-graded passes and fails (NGP, NGF) and transfer credit are left out of the GPA. The Program and Career GPAs count all attempts at all courses, so enter a failed course and its re-take as separate rows. Griffith's public Grades page no longer showed a degree-with-distinction rule when we re-checked it on 28 September 2026, so no distinction threshold is given here.

GPA Tips for Griffith Students

  • A failed course still earns points: a 3 counts as 3 in your GPA, while FNS and WF count as 0.
  • Enter a re-take as a new row; both attempts stay in the Program and Career GPA.
  • Round to two decimals: Griffith's protocol turns 6.43556 into 6.44 and 6.43442 into 6.43.

Common GPA Mistakes at Griffith

Counting every Griffith fail as 0. In the protocol's own sample, Trimester 2 grades of 1, 0 and 6 in three 10 credit point courses give 70 / 30 = 2.33; only FNS and WF are worth 0.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my Griffith GPA?
Multiply each course's grade (7 to 1, or 0 for FNS and WF) by its credit points, add them up and divide by the total credit points. In Griffith's protocol sample, Trimester 1 gives 400 / 80 = 5.00, Trimester 2 gives 70 / 30 = 2.33, and the Career GPA is 470 / 110 = 4.27.
Does a fail count in the Griffith GPA?
Yes. The fail grades 3 (45-49.5%), 2 (25-44.5%) and 1 (0.5-24.5%) count at their own value, and Fail No Assessment Submitted (FNS) and Withdrawal with Failure (WF) count as 0. A Withdrawal (W) is not counted as a failure.
What GPA do you need for good academic progress at Griffith?
A program GPA of at least 3.5, together with successfully completing 50% or more of the courses you are enrolled in. Griffith measures academic progress twice a year.
How is the Griffith GPA rounded?
To two decimal places for the Academic Transcript: the protocol's examples round 6.43556 to 6.44 and 6.43442 to 6.43.
What grading system does Griffith use?
Griffith University uses a 7.0-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
Which Griffith grade points are used on this page?

Is this Griffith calculator valid for every programme?
Non-graded passes and fails (NGP, NGF) and transfer credit are left out of the GPA. The Program and Career GPAs count all attempts at all courses, so enter a failed course and its re-take as separate rows.
