About the Flinders GPA System

Flinders University multiplies each grade value by the topic's unit value (usually 4.5 units), adds the results and divides by the total units undertaken. Its own example: a Distinction, a Pass and a Fail from 2021, each 4.5 units, plus a Non-Graded Pass that is left out, give 51.75 / 13.5 = 3.83.

Why GPA Matters at Flinders

A Chancellor's Letter of Commendation normally needs a GPA of at least 6.25, calculated to two decimal places, over your last 36 units. University Medal eligibility requires being in the top 1% of graduates at each AQF level and needs a minimum GPA of 6.5 for a bachelor or bachelor with honours degree (6.0 for a coursework master's), among other conditions. Honours classes follow marks: H1 85-100%, H2A 75-84%, H2B 65-74% and H3 50-64%.

Flinders Grading Note

Flinders grades on a 7-point GPA scale: High Distinction (85-100) 7, Distinction (75-84) 6, Credit (65-74) 5 and Pass (50-64) 4. From 2021 a Fail and a Withdraw Fail count 1.5; before 2021 they counted 0, so the calculator lists both. Each grade nominally corresponds to its mark range.

Flinders Accuracy Scope

Non-Graded Pass (NGP) and Withdraw, Not Fail (WN) topics are left out. Flinders calculates the GPA to two decimal places without stating the rounding method; this calculator also shows two decimals. Study before 1993 or at other institutions is converted with the SATAC conversion table, which is not built in here. A Fail is also given for missing a safe-practice or professional hurdle, whatever the aggregate mark.

GPA Tips for Flinders Students

  • Use the 1.5 fail values for results from 2021 and the 0 values for results before 2021, as Flinders lists them.
  • Topics are usually 4.5 units: enter each topic's unit value as its credits.
  • Leave Non-Graded Pass (NGP) and Withdraw, Not Fail (WN) topics out.

Common GPA Mistakes at Flinders

Counting every fail as 0. Since 2021 a Flinders Fail or Withdraw Fail counts 1.5, so Flinders' own example is 3.83; with the pre-2021 value of 0 the same topics give 3.33.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my Flinders GPA?
Multiply each grade value by the topic's unit value, add the results and divide by the total units undertaken. Flinders' example: Distinction (6 x 4.5 = 27), Pass (4 x 4.5 = 18) and a 2021 Fail (1.5 x 4.5 = 6.75) total 51.75; a Non-Graded Pass is left out, so the units are 13.5 and the GPA is 3.83.
Does a fail count in the Flinders GPA?
Yes. From 2021 a Fail (F) and a Withdraw Fail (WF) count 1.5; before 2021 both counted 0. Non-Graded Pass (NGP) and Withdraw, Not Fail (WN) topics are not counted.
What GPA do you need for a Chancellor's Letter of Commendation at Flinders?
Normally at least 6.25 on a scale of 7.00, calculated to two decimal places, over the last 36 units not already counted towards the same award. NGP-graded topics are left out, and no letter is given if that leaves 18 units or fewer and no preceding period of study can be included.
What is the Flinders grading scale?
HD 85-100 (7), DN 75-84 (6), CR 65-74 (5), P 50-64 (4) and F 0-49 (1.5 from 2021). Flinders says grades are usually awarded by these marks; the grade on your record is what counts. See other Australian university GPA calculators.
What grading system does Flinders use?
Flinders University uses a 7-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
