About the Monash GPA System

Monash multiplies each grade value by the unit's credit points, adds the results and divides by the total credit points attempted. Its example of nine units (6 to 24 credit points each) gives 229.80 / 78 = 2.946; the withdrawn fail still adds its 6 credit points. Your GPA appears in WES, in the Student Portal and on your academic record.

Why GPA Matters at Monash

Both the 4-point GPA and the WAM appear on your academic record. Honours grades come from weighted marks, not the GPA: for students who began an honours degree from 1 January 2021 they are H1 80 to 100, H2A 70 to below 80, H2B 60 to below 70 and a Pass grade 50 to below 60 (four-year honours degrees use the WAM; one-year honours weights thesis units as the faculty sets). Monash's GPA page says other institutions can use a different scale, such as seven points, and that you should ask them to convert a Monash GPA.

Monash Grading Note

Monash calculates its GPA on a 4-point scale: High Distinction (80-100) 4.0, Distinction (70-79) 3.0, Credit (60-69) 2.0 and Pass (50-59) 1.0. A Fail (N) or Hurdle Fail (NH) still counts 0.3, a Withdrawn Fail (WN) 0.0, and Near Pass (NP, only for units with a census date before 15 February 2010) 0.7. Monash also calculates a WAM out of 100 that weights first-year units at 0.5; for that, use our WAM calculator (linked in the FAQ below).

Monash Accuracy Scope

All grades count, including fails and repeated units. SFR, NE, NAS, WI, PGO, NPGO and WNGO are left out. Monash calculates the GPA to three decimal places; this calculator shows two, so its example of 2.946 shows as 2.95. The GPA is calculated for award courses started from semester one, 2008, and not for research master's or PhD courses. Monash University Malaysia's CGPA uses other grade values (it has its own page on this site).

GPA Tips for Monash Students

  • Enter each unit's credit points as its credits; Monash's example uses 6-, 12- and 24-point units.
  • Enter a failed unit and its repeat as two separate units: both stay in the GPA.
  • Include a Withdrawn Fail (WN) at 0.0 with its credit points.

Common GPA Mistakes at Monash

Treating a fail as zero. At Monash a Fail (N) or Hurdle Fail (NH) counts 0.3, and only a Withdrawn Fail (WN) counts 0.0.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Monash GPA calculated?
GPA = the sum of (grade value x unit credit points) divided by the sum of unit credit points, to three decimal places. Monash's own example of nine units, including a Fail (0.3) and a Withdrawn Fail (0.0), gives 229.80 / 78 = 2.946.
Is the Monash GPA out of 4 or 7?
Out of 4: HD 4.0, D 3.0, C 2.0, P 1.0, NP 0.7, N and NH 0.3, WN 0.0. Monash notes that other institutions can use a seven-point scale; to convert a Monash GPA, ask the institution that wants it. In Malaysia a CGPA with different values is used instead (see the Monash Malaysia CGPA calculator).
What is the difference between the Monash GPA and WAM?
The GPA averages grade values on the 4-point scale; the WAM averages your marks out of 100, weighted by credit points, with first-year units counted at 0.5 regardless of when you take them. Both include fails and repeated units and are calculated to three decimals. Work out your WAM with the WAM calculator.
Do failed and repeated units count in the Monash GPA?
Yes. All grades, including fail grades and grades from repeated units, are given a value and averaged. A Fail (N) adds 0.3 per credit point, and a Withdrawn Fail (WN) adds 0.0 while its credit points still count.
What grading system does Monash use?
Monash University uses a 4-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
Which Monash grade points are used on this page?
This page uses the following grade points for Monash: HD (High Distinction)=4.00, D (Distinction)=3.00, C (Credit)=2.00, P (Pass)=1.00, NP (Near Pass)=0.70, N (Fail)=0.30, NH (Hurdle Fail)=0.30, WN (Withdrawn Fail)=0.00.
Is this Monash calculator valid for every programme?
All grades count, including fails and repeated units. SFR, NE, NAS, WI, PGO, NPGO and WNGO are left out. Monash calculates the GPA to three decimal places; this calculator shows two, so its example of 2.946 shows as 2.95.
