About the UWA GPA System

UWA multiplies each unit's credit points by its GPA grade value and divides by the credit points. In UWA's example, Johnny takes six 6-credit-point units graded HD, CR, D, N, P and HD, withdraws early from one unit (WP, left out) and late from another (FN, counted as 0): 174 ÷ 42 = 4.14.

Why GPA Matters at UWA

Your GPA is on your academic transcript if you started your course in 2005 or later, and each course you take has its own GPA. UWA says that scholarships, fee places and awards with distinction may use a different GPA calculation, set out in the course or scholarship rules. We did not find a university-wide distinction threshold.

UWA Grading Note

UWA's GPA gives 7 for a Higher Distinction (80-100%), 6 for a Distinction (70-79%), 5 for a Credit Pass (60-69%) and 4 for a Pass (50-59%) or a passed supplementary exam. Both fail grades, N+ (45-49%) and N (0-44%), count 0, as do FN, FC, FS, UF and WE. UWA also reports a WAM (average mark); work that out with the WAM calculator at /wam-calculator/.

UWA Accuracy Scope

All attempts at units awarded a numeric grade count, and unfinalised results do not. Withdrawing before the academic penalty date keeps a unit out; withdrawing after it counts as a fail (0). UWA states no rounding rule; its example 174 ÷ 42 is printed as 4.14. The GPA used for admission to the Juris Doctor, Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dental Medicine and some assured pathways is calculated differently.

GPA Tips for UWA Students

  • Most UWA units are 6 credit points.
  • Enter a late withdrawal (FN) as a fail worth 0; an early withdrawal (WP or WD) is left out.
  • In the WAM, not the GPA, a Failed Component (FC) counts as 48 and a Passed Supplementary (PS) as 50.

Common GPA Mistakes at UWA

Entering only your latest attempt at a failed unit. UWA's GPA includes all attempts at units awarded a numeric grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the UWA GPA calculated?
Sum (unit credits × GPA grade value) ÷ sum of credit points. In UWA's example, units graded HD, CR, D, N, P and HD plus a late withdrawal (FN), each 6 credit points, give 174 ÷ 42 = 4.14. The early withdrawal (WP) is left out.
Do fails count as zero in the UWA GPA?
Yes. N+ (45-49%) and N (0-44%) both count 0, as do Fail due to non-completion (FN), Fail component (FC), Fail Supplementary Exam (FS), Ungraded Fail (UF) and Not permitted to sit exam (WE). All attempts count, so a failed unit stays in your GPA after you pass it.
What is the difference between the UWA GPA and WAM?
The GPA averages grade values out of 7; the WAM averages your marks out of 100, both weighted by credit points. For Jane, with marks of 85, 66, 72, 48, 55 and 83 and a late withdrawal counted as 0, the marks average 58.4286, which UWA prints as 58.42. Some grades count differently: FC is 0 in the GPA but 48 in the WAM, and UF is 0 in the GPA but left out of the WAM. Work out a WAM with our WAM calculator.
What grading system does UWA use?
The University of Western Australia uses a 7-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
Which UWA grade points are used on this page?
This page uses the following grade points for UWA: HD (Higher Distinction)=7.00, D (Distinction)=6.00, CR (Credit Pass)=5.00, P (Pass)=4.00, PS (Passed Supplementary Exam)=4.00, N+ (Fail)=0.00, N (Fail)=0.00, FN (Fail due to non-completion)=0.00, FC (Fail component)=0.00, FS (Fail Supplementary Exam)=0.00, UF (Ungraded Fail)=0.00, WE (Not permitted to sit exam)=0.00.
Is this UWA calculator valid for every programme?
All attempts at units awarded a numeric grade count, and unfinalised results do not. Withdrawing before the academic penalty date keeps a unit out; withdrawing after it counts as a fail (0). UWA states no rounding rule; its example 174 ÷ 42 is printed as 4.14. The GPA used for admission to the Juris Doctor, Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dental Medicine and some assured pathways is calculated differently.
What is the maximum GPA for UWA on this calculator?
The maximum GPA on this UWA page is 7.
