About the JCU GPA System

James Cook University's GPA is the average of your subject grades weighted by credit points: every subject with a grade is included, and a subject with more credit points carries proportionately more weight. It can be worked out for a year or for your whole course.

Why GPA Matters at JCU

Satisfactory academic performance requires you to pass all core subjects, maintain a course GPA of 4.00 or above and pass more than 50% of completed credit points. Graduates are awarded "With Distinction" with a minimum GPA of 6.00 for their JCU coursework, and a University Medal needs a GPA of 6.50 on JCU subjects (excluding thesis subjects) plus first class honours ranked IA, IB or IC, among other conditions. Honours classes follow marks: I 85-100, IIA 75-84, IIB 65-74 and III 50-64.

JCU Grading Note

JCU's Student Results Policy sets a 7-point GPA: HD (85%-100%) 7, D (75%-84%) 6, C (65%-74%) 5 and P (50%-64%) 4. A graded fail (F) and a fail after a late withdrawal (FW) both count 1.5, not 0; X (no assessment completed, or a misconduct outcome) counts 0. Some disciplines may use other methods for grade ranges, set out in the subject outline.

JCU Accuracy Scope

Satisfactory (S) and Unsatisfactory (U) results, withdrawals before the last date without academic penalty (WD) and interim results such as AP, ED, KU and RP are left out. JCU states no rounding rule; its own calculator shows two decimals and assumes 3 credit points per subject. Pass Conceded (PC, 3 points) is listed as current on JCU's GPA page but as discontinued on its results page. Before 2022 a fail was coded N, which JCU's calculator counts like F. Before 2022 a late withdrawal with penalty was coded WF; JCU's calculator groups WF with X at 0, though the policy table does not give WF a value.

GPA Tips for JCU Students

  • Count an F or FW as 1.5 and an X as 0.
  • Leave S, U and WD results out of the calculation.
  • Weight each subject by its credit points; JCU's own calculator assumes 3 credit points per subject.

Common GPA Mistakes at JCU

Entering a fail as 0. At JCU a graded fail (F) or late withdrawal (FW) counts 1.5: four 3-credit-point subjects graded C, P, P and F give 3.63, not the 3.25 you would get with a zero.
