About USyd Grading
Sydney keeps several averages: the WAM over a period you choose, the Annual Average Mark (AAM) for one year, the Semester Average Mark (SAM), the Cross-Semester Average Mark (CSAM) over a block of at least 48 credit points, and the Converted WAM (CWAM), which leaves out Semester 1 2020. A WAM does not appear on your final transcript, except that students who completed units in Semester 1 2020 have their WAM and CWAM included once they are awarded.
Why Your Average Matters at USyd
Average marks may be used to decide your eligibility for an honours program, prizes and scholarships, and to assess your progression; opportunities with a minimum WAM set their own calculation in their criteria or course resolutions. Under the Coursework Policy 2021, an honours mark of 80 to 100 earns First Class, 75 to below 80 Second Class Division 1, 70 to below 75 Second Class Division 2 and 50 to below 70 Third Class; below 50 no honours is awarded. These bands apply to students who commenced on or after 1 January 2021, and the policy adds that students who commenced before 1 January 2023 follow the course or faculty resolutions in force when they first enrolled unless they elect otherwise.
USyd Grading Note
The University of Sydney does not use a GPA. It measures results with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM): each unit mark times its credit points, divided by the credit points attempted. HD is 85 - 100, DI 75 - 84, CR 65 - 74 and PS 50 - 64; a Fail (FA) or Absent fail (AF) is 0 - 49 and counts at its mark. To compare Sydney with other Australian universities, use the WAM calculator at /wam-calculator/.
USyd Accuracy Scope
Include both the failed attempt and the passing re-take of a unit. Leave out units with a grade but no mark (SR, FR, CN, DC, DF, IC, RI, UC, J2, WD and NE), credit from another institution, and exchange or study abroad units. Level weights have been 1 for every unit since May 2020, but some faculty averages, such as the Engineering Integrated Honours WAM, weight units by level. Sydney states no rounding rule; this calculator shows two decimals.
Tips for USyd Students
- Weight each unit by its credit points: a 12 credit point unit counts twice as much as a 6 credit point unit.
- Enter a failed attempt and its re-take as two separate rows; Sydney counts both marks.
- If an application asks for a GPA, use the formula of the institution asking: Sydney says it does not use a GPA.
Common WAM Mistakes at USyd
Dropping a failed attempt after passing the re-take. In the sample loaded by the example button, counting the failed 45 and the re-take gives 69.40; leaving the fail out would show 75.50, which is not how Sydney calculates the WAM.
