About the WSU GPA System

WSU's official example: units of 10, 10, 10 and 40 credit points graded High Distinction, Distinction, Fail and High Distinction give [(10×7) + (10×6) + (10×0) + (40×7)] ÷ 70 = 5.857. WSU keeps a term GPA, used for progression, and a cumulative GPA over your enrolment in a program.

Why GPA Matters at WSU

Progression is judged on your term GPA: 3.500 or more is Good Standing, 2.500 to 3.499 At Risk, 1.500 to 2.499 Conditional Enrolment and 1.499 or less Exclusion. A cumulative GPA of 6.0 or more in a coursework program earns the award "with distinction", and the Dean's Merit List needs a GPA of 6.00 on at least 40 credit points in the academic year. The Dean's Medal goes to the highest cumulative GPA in a program's graduating cohort if it is 6.25 or higher; the University Medal needs Class I Honours and a cumulative GPA of 6.5 in an honours program of at least 80 credit points.

WSU Grading Note

Western Sydney University grades on a 7-point GPA scale: High Distinction (100-85) is 7, Distinction 6, Credit 5 and Pass (64-50) 4. Every fail grade counts 0, including a Compulsory Fail (CF) with a total mark of 50 or more. The GPA is credit points times grade points, divided by the total credit points attempted.

WSU Accuracy Scope

Both grades of a repeated unit count. Satisfactory (S), Withdrawn without academic penalty (W), advanced standing (K and L) and Aegrotat Pass (Z) are left out. WSU states no rounding rule; its own example is printed to three decimals (5.857), while this calculator shows two. Students of The College (foundation programs) have a different grading schema.

GPA Tips for WSU Students

  • Take each unit's credit points from the Handbook. The calculator takes up to 30 credit points per row, so enter a 40-credit-point unit, like the one in WSU's example, as two rows of 20 with the same grade.
  • Keep failed attempts in: both grades of a repeated unit count.
  • Check your term GPA against 3.500, the Good Standing threshold.

Common GPA Mistakes at WSU

Leaving out a Compulsory Fail because the total mark was 50 or more. A CF counts 0 grade points, like any other fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the WSU GPA calculated?
Multiply each unit's credit points by its grade points (High Distinction 7, Distinction 6, Credit 5, Pass 4, fails 0), add them up and divide by the total credit points attempted. WSU's example: [(10×7) + (10×6) + (10×0) + (40×7)] ÷ 70 = 5.857.
What GPA do I need for Good Standing at WSU?
A term GPA of 3.500 or more. From 2.500 to 3.499 you are At Risk, from 1.500 to 2.499 on Conditional Enrolment (a reduced study load), and at 1.499 or less you are excluded for 12 months.
What GPA do you need to graduate with distinction at WSU?
A cumulative GPA of 6.0 or above in a coursework program. The Dean's Merit List needs a GPA of 6.00 on at least 40 credit points in the year, and the Dean's Medal the top cumulative GPA in your program's graduating cohort, at least 6.25. Compare other universities' thresholds on our Australian GPA calculator page.
What grading system does WSU use?
Western Sydney University uses a 7-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
Which WSU grade points are used on this page?
This page uses the following grade points for WSU: H (High Distinction)=7.00, D (Distinction)=6.00, C (Credit)=5.00, P (Pass)=4.00, Conceded Pass (pre-2006)=3.00, F (Fail)=0.00, CF (Compulsory Fail)=0.00, FNS (Fail Non Submission)=0.00, U (Unsatisfactory)=0.00, PF (Practicum Fail)=0.00, E (Fail-discontinued)=0.00, AF (Absent Fail)=0.00.
Is this WSU calculator valid for every programme?
Both grades of a repeated unit count. Satisfactory (S), Withdrawn without academic penalty (W), advanced standing (K and L) and Aegrotat Pass (Z) are left out. WSU states no rounding rule; its own example is printed to three decimals (5.857), while this calculator shows two. Students of The College (foundation programs) have a different grading schema.
