About UNSW Grading
UNSW Sydney keeps a term WAM for each term or semester and an overall WAM for your whole program; where relevant there is also a WAM on the courses that count toward your award and a faculty WAM. UNSW's own example: marks of 80, 81 and 82 in 6-UOC courses and 83 and 84 in 3-UOC courses give a WAM of 81.625.
Why Your Average Matters at UNSW
UNSW uses the WAM to decide whether you may continue in your program, program transfers, Pass with Distinction (a WAM of at least 75 in a Bachelor Pass degree or the Juris Doctor), with Excellence (at least 80 in a coursework master's, excluding Masters (Extended)), classes of honours and the University Medal. Honours rules are set by each program: in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), Class 1 needs an Honours WAM of at least 80 and a thesis mark of at least 65.
UNSW Grading Note
UNSW does not use a GPA. It reports a Weighted Average Mark (WAM): each course mark times its units of credit, added up and divided by the total units of credit. The grade bands are HD 85-100, DN 75-84, CR 65-74, PS 50-64 and FL 0-49. The WAM calculator (linked in the FAQ below) also covers UNSW and other Australian universities.
UNSW Accuracy Scope
The overall WAM uses every course result in your program, so failed attempts stay in. A course finalised with a grade but no mark counts at a nominal mark (HD 90, DN 80, CR 70, PS 55, FL 25), an Absent Fail (AF) counts 0, and a hurdle fail (UF, mark range 40-100) is included. Academic Withdrawal (AW), courses graded only SY/FL and marks from other institutions are left out. This calculator rounds to two decimals; UNSW does not round a WAM up when checking award eligibility, so 74.996 does not reach 75. Each honours program's rules set the class requirements and may define its own WAM.
Tips for UNSW Students
- Enter each course's units of credit (UOC); UNSW's example mixes 6-UOC and 3-UOC courses.
- For a course finalised with a grade but no mark, enter UNSW's nominal mark: HD 90, DN 80, CR 70, PS 55, FL 25.
- Keep failed attempts in: the overall WAM uses every course result in your program.
Common WAM Mistakes at UNSW
Converting a UNSW WAM into a GPA and calling it official. UNSW says it does not use a GPA and cannot help calculate one; the institution that asks for a GPA may be able to advise how to convert your results.
