About the UTAS GPA System

The UTAS GPA summarises the final results of the units in your course. Each unit's grade is multiplied by its credit points to give a grade point (a Distinction in a standard 12.5 credit point unit gives 6 x 12.5 = 75), and the GPA is the sum of grade points divided by the total credit points attempted.

UTAS Grading Note

UTAS uses a 7-point GPA with a High Distinction from 80%: HD (80–100%) is 7, DN (70–79%) 6, CR (60–69%) 5 and PP (50–59%) 4, while the NN, AN and WN fails are 0; the maximum GPA is 7.0. Honours grades share these values (HF 7, HU 6, HL 5, HT 4, HN 0). When we re-checked on 28 September 2026 the UTAS website answered with a bot check, so these rules come from the Assessment and Results Procedure (Version 5, approved 22 October 2025) in a copy identical to the Internet Archive capture of 23 August 2026, and from an archived copy of the Ask Us GPA answer (updated 2 February 2024).

UTAS Accuracy Scope

Failed units count even if you later pass the same unit. Credited units, exemptions, ungraded passes (UP) and withheld results are left out, but units credited from another UTAS course count in the original course's GPA and units transferred with their grade are included. The archived Ask Us answer also lists FP (Faculty Pass) as 3 and says WW (Withdrawn without fail) is not counted; the current procedure does not list FP, so it is not in the calculator. UTAS states no rounding rule; this calculator shows two decimals.

GPA Tips for UTAS Students

  • Enter a standard unit as 12.5 credit points.
  • Keep a failed unit in your GPA even after you pass it on a re-take: UTAS counts both.
  • Leave out ungraded passes (UP) and credited units from other institutions.

Common GPA Mistakes at UTAS

Using an 85% cut-off for a High Distinction. At UTAS an HD starts at 80%, a Distinction at 70% and a Credit at 60%.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the UTAS GPA calculated?
Multiply each unit's grade (HD 7, DN 6, CR 5, PP 4, fails 0) by its credit points, add them up and divide by the total credit points attempted. A Distinction in a standard 12.5 credit point unit adds 6 x 12.5 = 75 grade points. The maximum GPA is 7.0.
What is a High Distinction at UTAS?
HD (High Distinction) 80–100%, DN (Distinction) 70–79%, CR (Credit) 60–69%, PP (Pass) 50–59%. Below 50% is a fail.
What is the difference between NN and AN at UTAS?
Both are fails below 50% and both count as 0 in the GPA. NN (Fail) is given when you attempted assessment tasks worth at least 75% of the unit's assessment; AN (Absent deemed failed) is given, with no mark, when you attempted less than 75%.
Do failed units count in the UTAS GPA if I repeat them?
Yes. The procedure says failed units are taken into account in the GPA even if you later pass the same unit, so both attempts count.
What grading system does UTAS use?
University of Tasmania uses a 7.0-point grading scale. Use the official grade values shown below and weight each included course by its credit units; exclusions and award rules vary by university.
Which UTAS grade points are used on this page?
This page uses the following grade points for UTAS: HD (High Distinction)=7.00, DN (Distinction)=6.00, CR (Credit)=5.00, PP (Pass)=4.00, NN (Fail)=0.00, AN (Absent fail)=0.00, WN (Withdrawn fail)=0.00.
Is this UTAS calculator valid for every programme?
Failed units count even if you later pass the same unit. Credited units, exemptions, ungraded passes (UP) and withheld results are left out, but units credited from another UTAS course count in the original course's GPA and units transferred with their grade are included. The archived Ask Us answer also lists FP (Faculty Pass) as 3 and says WW (Withdrawn without fail) is not counted; the current procedure does not list FP, so it is not in the calculator. UTAS states no rounding rule; this calculator shows two decimals.
What is the maximum GPA for UTAS on this calculator?
The maximum GPA on this UTAS page is 7.0.
How can I verify UTAS grading policy before using this result?
