About Curtin Grading

Curtin's example: units of 12.5, 25, 25 and 25 credits with marks of 57, 60, 63 and 67 give 5462.5/87.5 = 62.43. Curtin says the CWA scale (0.00 minimum, 50.00 mid-point, 100.00 maximum) may be used by another institution to calculate an equivalent GPA, and suggests asking that institution for its conversion.

Why Your Average Matters at Curtin

A single-degree CWA of 80.00 or more earns an Award with Distinction; in a double degree, an AWA of 80.00 in one or both degrees earns it for that degree. Good standing needs a semester weighted average (SWA) of 50 or more and passing more than 50% of your enrolled units each study period.

Curtin Grading Note

Curtin does not use or calculate a GPA. It reports a Course Weighted Average (CWA) of your unit marks, weighted by unit credits, and names its pass grades by the mark's tens: 5 is 50 – 59, 8 is 80 – 89 and 10 is a mark of 100. For the same CWA rules side by side with other universities, use the WAM calculator at /wam-calculator/.

Curtin Accuracy Scope

The CWA includes failed units at their mark, F-IN marks, units credited as Automatic or Designated Credit that carry a mark, and 0 for an annulled result (ANN). Pass/fail units, ungraded passes, withdrawals (WD) and interim grades are left out. Final unit marks are rounded at x.5 (79.50 becomes 80.00) before averaging. Curtin's example is shown to two decimals (62.43). A double degree gets an Award Weighted Average (AWA) for each degree.

Tips for Curtin Students

  • Round each final unit mark first: 79.50 counts as 80.00 and 79.49 as 79.00.
  • Use the unit credits from your transcript; Curtin's example uses 12.5 and 25.
  • Leave pass/fail units and withdrawals (WD) out, but enter an annulled result (ANN) as 0.

Common WAM Mistakes at Curtin

Calling a converted CWA a Curtin GPA. Curtin publishes no GPA; if you are asked for one, the institution asking may have its own conversion or calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert my Curtin CWA to a GPA?
Curtin publishes no conversion, because it does not use or calculate a GPA. It says its CWA scale (0.00 minimum, 50.00 mid-point, 100.00 maximum) may be used to calculate an equivalent GPA, and recommends asking the institution that wants a GPA, which may have its own guide or calculator.
How is the Curtin CWA calculated?
Sum (unit credits × unit marks) ÷ sum (unit credits). Curtin's example: 12.5 × 57 + 25 × 60 + 25 × 63 + 25 × 67 = 5462.5, divided by 87.5 credits = 62.43. Failed units count at their mark; pass/fail units and withdrawals do not.
What CWA do I need for an Award with Distinction at Curtin?
A CWA of 80.00 or more in a single degree. In a double degree, an Award Weighted Average (AWA) of 80.00 or more earns the distinction for that degree. See how other universities set theirs on our Australian GPA calculator page.
Does Curtin use a GPA?
No. Curtin University grades courses in percentages and reports averages as percentages, weighted by credits.
How is the Curtin average calculated?
Multiply each course percentage by its credits, add them up and divide by the total credits.
