About the Swinburne GPA System

Swinburne's GPA is total grade points divided by total credit points, where each unit's grade points are its credit points times its GPA value. Vocational education (diploma and above) uses student contact hours instead of credit points. You can see your GPA in My Swinburne, on your results and on your academic transcript.

Why GPA Matters at Swinburne

Swinburne says a GPA can be among the criteria for a study offer, for identifying candidates for academic prizes, or when you apply for a job or another university place. The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) sets its merit level from the averaged results of 12 units in the final two years: 80 or more is with High Distinction, 70 - 79 with Distinction and 60 - 69 with Credit.

Swinburne Grading Note

Swinburne has used a 4-point GPA since 2014: HD (80% - 100%) is 4, D 3, C 2 and P 1. A Conceded Pass (45% - 49%) earns 0.5 and a Passed Supplementary (SP) 1, while N, NA, SN and WF fails earn 0. Swinburne states no rounding rule; its own example is printed to two decimals, as this calculator shows.

Swinburne Accuracy Scope

Pass-only units, competency-based units and grades without marks (such as CON, DEF, TRF and EXM) have no GPA value, so leave them out. Fail grades from the listed 2021 teaching periods were omitted from the GPA automatically. Swinburne's table prints N as 0% - 49%, overlapping the Conceded Pass band of 45% - 49%: a conceded pass is granted only when its criteria are met. Records from before 2014 follow an older schema.

GPA Tips for Swinburne Students

  • A Conceded Pass (CP) earns 0.5, not 1, and you can be granted one only once.
  • Leave pass-only and competency-based units out: they have no GPA value.
  • Enter credit points as Swinburne lists them, such as 12.5 or 25 in its own example.

Common GPA Mistakes at Swinburne

Reading a Swinburne GPA as if it were out of 7. Swinburne's own example of 175 grade points over 100 credit points is 1.75 out of 4.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my Swinburne GPA?
Multiply each unit's credit points by its GPA value, add them up and divide by the total credit points. Swinburne's example of HD, D, P and N at 12.5 credit points, P and C at 25 and one more P at 12.5 gives 175 / 100 = 1.75. Its vocational example, weighted by contact hours, gives 625 / 245 = 2.55.
What is a conceded pass worth at Swinburne?
A Conceded Pass (CP) has a GPA value of 0.5. Undergraduate and Unilink Diploma students with a mark of 45 to 49 may be granted one if the unit does not satisfy a prerequisite requirement, they are not enrolled in a single unit only, and they have never been granted a conceded pass before.
Were 2021 fails removed from the Swinburne GPA?
Yes, for the 2021 higher education teaching periods listed on Swinburne's omit form (for example Semester 2, HE Terms 3 and 4 and HE Blocks 6 to 8): fail grades in those periods are automatically omitted. Students could also apply to omit passing results from those periods.
What mark is a High Distinction at Swinburne?
80% to 100%. A Distinction is 70% - 79%, a Credit 60% - 69% and a Pass 50% - 59%.
What grading system does Swinburne use?
