About Macquarie Grading

Macquarie's WAM page compares two students. Harry, with marks of 58, 74, 64, 59, 64, 74, 73, 56, has a WAM of 65.25; Fred, with 52, 70, 61, 53, 62, 71, 72, 50, has 61.375 (printed as 61.4). On the 7-point GPA both score 4.375, because every mark from 50 to 64 earns the same 4 points. Students who completed their course before 2020 have a GPA on their transcript instead.

Why Your Average Matters at Macquarie

The Macquarie University Award for Academic Excellence goes to graduates of new 2020 curriculum courses with a WAM of 85.000 (earlier students need a GPA of 4.000 out of 4, or 6.500 out of 7 if they commenced after 1 January 2017). The 2026 Merit List takes Bachelor students who completed 60 credit points or more at Macquarie in 2025 with a 2025 WAM of 85 or above. For Bachelor of Laws (Honours), a LAWS WAM of 75.00 or above earns First Class and 70.00 to below 75.00 Second Class, and the LAWS WAM is not rounded.

Macquarie Grading Note

From 2020 Macquarie measures results with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM), the average out of 100 of all the marks in your course, replacing the GPA. HD is 85-100, D 75-84, CR 65-74 and P 50-64, and a fail counts at its actual mark. The GPA line uses Macquarie's 7-point scale for students who commenced from 1 January 2017 and completed before 2020 (HD 7, D 6, Cr 5, P 4, F 0). To compare with other universities, use the WAM calculator at /wam-calculator/.

Macquarie Accuracy Scope

Grades without a mark, such as S, are left out, and Macquarie says to exclude W grades and Specified and Unspecified Credit when you estimate your WAM. A Fail Hurdle (FH) is recorded as 49. Appendix B prints no credit-point formula, but Macquarie's WAM estimator weights units by credit points. Students who commenced between 2011 and 31 December 2016 had a 4-point GPA on which HD and D were both 4; the GPA line does not apply that scale, and Macquarie's pages label the dates of the two GPA scales differently. Macquarie states no rounding rule; this calculator shows two decimals.

Tips for Macquarie Students

  • Enter failed units at their actual mark: the WAM uses the 35 or 46 you scored, while the old GPA gave every fail 0.
  • Leave out W grades, S grades and Specified or Unspecified Credit.
  • Enter each unit's credit points; Macquarie's estimator weights by them.

Common WAM Mistakes at Macquarie

Rounding a LAWS WAM up to the honours cut-off. Macquarie Law School says a LAWS WAM is not rounded, so a final LAWS WAM of 74.95 receives Second Class Honours, not First Class.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did Macquarie replace the GPA with the WAM?
From 2020. Students studying at Macquarie from 1 January 2020 receive a WAM; students who completed their course before 1 January 2020 have a GPA on their transcript. The Grading System page says the WAM replaces the GPA for students admitted to a course from 2020.
How do I convert my Macquarie marks to a GPA?
Use the 7-point scale from Assessment Policy Appendix B: HD 85-100 = 7, D 75-84 = 6, Cr 65-74 = 5, P 50-64 = 4, F 0-49 = 0, weighted by credit points. For Harry's eight units in Macquarie's example this gives 4.375, while his WAM is 65.25. The calculator above shows both.
What WAM do you need for the Macquarie Award for Academic Excellence?
A WAM of 85.000 for students in new 2020 curriculum courses, together with enough credit points taken at Macquarie under its Recognition of Prior Learning Policy. The 2026 Merit List also needs a 2025 WAM of 85 or above, on at least 60 credit points completed at Macquarie in 2025.
Do fails count in the Macquarie WAM?
Yes, at the actual mark you received: the WAM is the average of ALL marks in all units of your course. A Fail Hurdle (FH) is recorded as 49. If you are still enrolled after the last date to withdraw without academic penalty, you receive a mark that counts unless a withdrawal without penalty is approved.
Does Macquarie use a GPA?
Not for current courses. Macquarie has used WAM since 2020; the optional 7-point GPA shown here applies only to the historical cohort described below, not to current applications.
How is the Macquarie average calculated?
Multiply each course percentage by its credit points, add them up and divide by the total credit points.
How can I verify Macquarie grading policy before using this result?
Check the Official References section on this page first.
