New Zealand GPA Rules

Choose the calculator for your university, then check which courses count. The same letter grades do not always mean the same GPA calculation.

Auckland GPA Calculator

Programme or cumulative GPA; DNS/DNC and ungraded results.

Wellington GPA Calculator

August 2026 handbook; course subsets and repeat attempts.

Otago GPA Calculator

Paper points, AE versus AG, and one-decimal display.

Massey GPA Calculator

Graded credits, neutral results and qualification scope.

Which rules change the result?

AucklandD+, D, D−, DNS, DNCP/F, W/WD, CRD excluded; CP not modeled2-decimal planning estimate
Wellington (August 2026 handbook)D, E, K; pass/fail FP/G/J/L excluded; student webpage gives L a conflicting value1 decimal, like handbook example
OtagoD, E, DS, FC, FD, FE, FTAG, ungraded F/P, transfers and withdrawals excluded1 decimal, like academic records

Course points are weights, not grade points

Multiply each included course’s grade value by its course points, add those products, then divide by the sum of the included points. A 30-point paper weighs twice as much as a 15-point paper. Enter an existing GPA and completed GPA-bearing points only when extending the same record; do not include a course twice.

For a simple illustration, A (8) at 15 points and a zero-grade course at 15 points give 120 ÷ 30 = 4.00. If the second course is excluded instead, the denominator is 15 and the GPA is 8.00. Grade code treatment changes the answer, not merely the label.

Pick the record before checking an entry threshold

An annual GPA, a qualification GPA and an admissions GPA can use different courses. The linked calculators do not automatically identify a programme subset, replace repeat attempts or award honours. Wellington’s handbook distinguishes overall performance from a selected-course admission average; Massey distinguishes normal individualised GPA from discrete-purpose calculations. Use the course set specified for your task.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every New Zealand GPA the same?
No. The four calculators linked here share A+ = 9 through C− = 1, but the treatment of other codes and the courses included differs. Canterbury publishes negative values for E and X, so a generic zero-for-every-fail calculator is not suitable there.
Can I convert a NZ 9-point GPA directly to a US 4.0 GPA?
A linear multiplication is not a universal official conversion. The receiving university or application service decides its own equivalence and course selection. Use its stated method rather than treating 9-to-4 scaling as a transcript conversion.
Does an excluded course count like a zero?
No. A zero-grade course contributes its points to the denominator and pulls the average down. An excluded course contributes neither grade points nor course points.
