Use the final credited record, not every school report

Choose the NCEA certificate level you are planning for. List the final credited result for each applicable standard, with its level and credits. The calculator accepts Achieved, Merit and Excellence as achieved results; Not Achieved contributes no academic credits. A higher-level applicable result can contribute to the selected lower-level certificate. Credits below the selected level do not fill that academic gap.

Repeated entries for one standard are rejected, even if you give them different labels. This prevents an obvious form of duplicate counting, but it does not resolve different standards that assess the same learning outcome. Remove the mutually excluded result before entry, using the credited NZQA record and the official exclusions list. The five-digit code is a record identifier here, not an automatic check of every standard’s credit value.

Reserve the co-requisite before counting course credits

The 2026 rules use 60 applicable credits at the level or above, alongside separately satisfied literacy or te reo matatini and numeracy or te pāngarau requirements. The two confirmation boxes refer to the co-requisite shown on your NZQA record. They are not a claim that any ten English or mathematics credits qualify. You only need the co-requisite once, but it must be established before a certificate condition is complete.

Where credits from additional approved standards are used for the co-requisite, reserve that allocation in the row. For example, if a verified applicable 6-credit result has 4 credits reserved, the academic total gains 2, not 6. Surplus qualifying credits may remain available at their own level. Dedicated co-requisite codes are excluded from the academic total automatically. This tool does not choose between alternative literacy routes or combine routes that cannot be mixed.

Read a credit gap separately from a qualification award

A record with 58 applicable Level 3 credits has a 2-credit academic gap. If you add a valid 4-credit Level 3 result, the total becomes 62 and the academic gap becomes zero. A missing numeracy confirmation still prevents the calculator from saying the entered conditions are met. Conversely, checking both co-requisite boxes does not invent missing academic credits.

Credit inclusion, special administrative credits and disputed or historical records need NZQA review. This worksheet covers entered applicable standards under the current 60-credit structure; it does not reproduce an older 80-course-credit formula. It keeps inputs in the browser and does not submit results. Use the trace to reconcile counted, reserved and omitted credits with your record before planning another assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do co-requisite credits also count in the 60?
Reserved additional-standard credits do not count twice; surplus credits can remain applicable. Dedicated co-requisite standards do not enter this academic total.
Does Merit give more certificate credits than Achieved?
No. Both earn the standard’s achieved credit value. Their grade matters for endorsement, not the 60-credit arithmetic.
Is a zero gap proof that NZQA awarded my certificate?
No. Your applicable record, co-requisite and any exclusions still determine the official award.
