Certificate endorsement is a graded-credit task

Use this calculator for the endorsement of an NCEA certificate, not a single course and not a university rank score. Choose the certificate level, then enter the final achieved standards and their actual credit values. Excellence credits contribute to both the Excellence total and the combined Merit-plus-Excellence total. Achieved credits can help earn a certificate but do not fill either endorsement threshold.

Only entered credits at the selected level or above count in this threshold check. For example, Level 2 Excellence credits do not fill the Level 3 Excellence requirement. The table keeps each entered row visible so you can see whether the grade or level caused it to be omitted. Repeated standard codes are rejected; you still need to remove mutually excluded standards from your record.

Compare two gaps instead of assuming every Merit result is Excellence

A planning record with 35 Excellence credits and 15 Merit credits reaches 50 combined credits, so it reaches the Merit credit threshold. It still needs 15 more Excellence credits for the Excellence threshold. Replacing a 5-credit Merit result with its final Excellence result would raise Excellence to 40 while leaving the combined total at 50; do not add both versions as separate credits.

Achievement across different years can be relevant to certificate endorsement, unlike the one-academic-year rule for a course endorsement. Co-requisite credits can still be used in endorsement calculations where the standards and grades qualify, even when they are reserved outside the academic 60-credit count. This page therefore does not subtract the reservation used by the separate certificate-progress tool.

Confirm the certificate and any lower-level upgrade separately

The calculator shows a credit threshold only when the certificate confirmation box is unchecked. Checking it means you have verified the selected certificate on your NZQA record; it does not send a request or make an unearned certificate eligible. The minimum for either ordinary certificate endorsement is 50 qualifying graded credits, not the 14 credits used for a course endorsement.

NZQA has specific rules for the highest eligible certificate, certificates earned in one year and later upgrades of lower-level endorsements. This worksheet isolates the graded-credit threshold for the level you selected. It does not decide which endorsement NZQA will print or automatically upgrade a previous certificate. Check the current record and contact NZQA about an award or upgrade discrepancy rather than treating the displayed grade as an agency decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Merit and Excellence be combined?
Yes for Merit endorsement. Excellence endorsement needs 50 Excellence credits on its own.
Is this the same as course endorsement?
No. A course uses one school year and internal/external assessment requirements. A certificate uses the 50-credit graded threshold.
Are Achieved credits counted toward Merit?
No. Only Merit and Excellence credits contribute to that threshold.
