Check the actual standard, not the subject name
Enter achieved standards from your final results record using the five-digit code and the published credit value. The calculator compares codes with the current downloaded NZQA UE literacy spreadsheet. Its supported snapshot contains ordinary numeric-credit standards; scholarship recognition, special historical conditions and standards absent from that snapshot require the official record rather than a guessed credit value.
A listed code is classified as reading only, writing only or both, and its title appears in the trace. A mismatch with the published credit value produces an error rather than silently changing it. Not Achieved results contribute no credits. A code outside the snapshot is explicitly flagged, not asserted to be eligible or permanently ineligible. Standard-level exclusions and correct recognition dates still need your final NZQA record.
A both-category credit can be allocated only once
UE literacy needs five credits in reading and five in writing, using qualifying Level 2 or higher standards. A four-credit standard listed for both categories provides four credits in total, not eight. The allocation puts available both-category credits toward a reading gap, then a writing gap. Surplus reading-only credits do not fill writing, and surplus writing-only credits do not fill reading.
The example uses reading-only standard 91184, writing-only standard 91180 and both-category standard 91482, each worth four credits in the downloaded list. The first two supply four reading and four writing credits. One credit from 91482 fills each remaining gap; the other two are not needed for this minimum. Removing the writing-only result leaves a two-credit writing gap to resolve, not an automatic pass from the raw total.
Use the allocation with the wider entrance record
The displayed reading and writing figures are capped at the five-credit minimum so the result does not encourage double-counting surplus credits. The trace preserves the full eligible standard credits and category; it is not an instruction to delete surplus achieved credits from your academic record. Credits eligible for other purposes can still need separate rule checks in those tasks.
This worksheet does not establish NCEA Level 3, the three approved subjects, numeracy, a programme rank score or an English-language requirement imposed by a university. It also does not submit or edit your results. If the official record already recognises UE literacy, use that recognition; if an entered result differs, reconcile the code, credits, grade and any applicable date conditions against the current NZQA list.
