About the Canterbury GPA System

UC’s official glossary example uses B at 15 points, C at 15, C− at 15, D at 15 and E at 30. Its weighted total is 75 + 30 + 15 + 0 − 30 = 90, over 90 included points, giving GPA 1.00. A set consisting only of X grades gives −3.00, not zero.

Canterbury Grading Note

Canterbury weights each recorded grade value by the course points. R earns 1, D earns 0, E earns −1 and X earns −3. All those course points remain in the denominator. P has no GPA value: leave it out rather than entering zero. This is not the non-negative scale used by several other New Zealand universities.

Canterbury Accuracy Scope

Calculate an annual GPA using that year’s courses, or an overall GPA using the applicable courses from all years. Enter an existing negative GPA with the points used to calculate it if you want a cumulative projection. Do not add the same course again to the prior total. These two-decimal planning results do not determine an honours award or programme eligibility; those may use a different course set or weighting.

GPA Tips for Canterbury Students

  • Use the letter grade on your academic record, rather than inventing a raw-mark conversion.
  • R counts in GPA but does not normally satisfy a prerequisite. Do not treat it as an excluded ungraded pass.
  • For a prior GPA of −1 across 60 points and a new A+ course worth 15 points, the projected GPA is (−60 + 135) ÷ 75 = 1.00.
  • Omit P and other ungraded or incomplete entries whose GPA value is not provided here; confirm the applicable record with UC when a special code is not listed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a University of Canterbury GPA be negative?
Yes. UC assigns E a grade value of −1 and X a grade value of −3. Their weighted contributions can make an annual or overall GPA negative. This calculator preserves those values.
Is a Canterbury restricted pass included in GPA?
Yes. R has grade value 1 in UC’s glossary. Its course points enter the denominator. P has no GPA value and should be omitted instead.
How do I combine my previous Canterbury GPA with new courses?
Enter the previous GPA, including a negative value, and the included course points behind it. Add only the new courses. The calculation combines previous GPA × previous points with the new weighted grade points, then divides by all included points.
What grading system does Canterbury use?
University of Canterbury assigns GPA values from -3 to 9. Weight each included course grade by its course points; ungraded exclusions and award rules must be checked separately.
Which Canterbury grade points are used on this page?
This page uses the following grade points for Canterbury: A+=9.00, A=8.00, A-=7.00, B+=6.00, B=5.00, B-=4.00, C+=3.00, C=2.00, C-=1.00, R=1.00, D=0.00, E=-1.00, X=-3.00.
Is this Canterbury calculator valid for every programme?
Calculate an annual GPA using that year’s courses, or an overall GPA using the applicable courses from all years. Enter an existing negative GPA with the points used to calculate it if you want a cumulative projection. Do not add the same course again to the prior total. These two-decimal planning results do not determine an honours award or programme eligibility; those may use a different course set or weighting.
What is the maximum GPA for Canterbury on this calculator?
The maximum GPA on this Canterbury page is 9.
How can I verify Canterbury grading policy before using this result?
Check the Official References section on this page first. Primary sources used: UC glossary: GPA values and worked example (30 March 2026); UC grading scale: annual and overall GPA scope.
